Rotate the device or resize this window. Rotation lock and browser support can prevent an angle change.

Quick answer

What Screen Orientation Test tells you

Track the browser-reported orientation type, angle and viewport while you rotate or resize the device.

Observed here
Orientation type and angle, Portrait or landscape media query, Live viewport dimensions.
How to interpret it
Screen orientation type and angle describe the exposed orientation API; portrait or landscape from CSS describes the viewport aspect ratio. Resizing a desktop window can change the latter without rotating a screen.
Important limit
Results reflect events and values exposed by this browser.
Data handling
Test values are calculated in this browser. Device Test Bench does not store a test result or create a device fingerprint.

Useful next comparison: Compare viewport dimensions with orientation type and angle; check rotation lock if a supported mobile device does not update.

Understanding the result

What a result means

Orientation type, angle and viewport changes show what the browser reports while the device rotates or the window changes shape. A fixed value on desktop or with rotation lock is normal and does not indicate a sensor fault.

Confirm the pattern by repeating orientation type and angle. Results reflect events and values exposed by this browser.

How to use this test

  1. Open the tool on the screen you want to check.
  2. Rotate the device or resize the browser.
  3. Compare the reported type, angle and viewport.
  4. Review operating-system rotation lock if no change appears.

What this test checks

  • Orientation type and angle
  • Portrait or landscape media query
  • Live viewport dimensions
  • Orientation-change count

What this test cannot check

Results reflect events and values exposed by this browser.

This test does not certify hardware or replace professional inspection.

Some desktop browsers report a fixed angle and mobile system rotation lock can prevent changes.

Device Test Bench provides browser-based diagnostic information for reference. It does not replace professional hardware inspection or repair.

Common problems and troubleshooting

Check system rotation lock, rotate slowly and compare the media-query result with the reported angle. On desktop, resize the window separately so viewport orientation is not confused with physical screen orientation.

  1. Repeat the same observation. Focus the test surface and repeat “Orientation type and angle” three times under the same conditions.
  2. Change one condition. Compare “Portrait or landscape media query” after changing only the relevant port, connection, browser setting or application.
  3. Rule out focus or interception. Close overlays and reserved shortcuts, keep the page visible and confirm that the live indicator changes during the action.
  4. Keep the result within its limit. Results reflect events and values exposed by this browser.

If the same pattern remains across relevant applications and connections, give the manufacturer or a qualified technician the repeatable observations instead of a guessed fault label.

Browser compatibility

Screen Orientation support and angle reporting vary by platform, particularly on iOS and desktop browsers. The tool also uses a CSS media query as an independent layout observation.
